First Long Night of Museum took place in Berlin in 1997. Due to the success of this event
more and more cities started to reproduce it. In Poland, the first Night of Museum was organized in 2003, six years
after its debut in Poznan, but
nowadays it is also organized in Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw, Szczecin and many
others polish cities.
Traditionally, it takes place on the weekend, around 18 May. On this day since 1977, we are celebrating International Museum Day.
The format of this event remains unchanged over the years, the participants experience nocturnal visit of
various institutions, which not only
provide a free access to the permanent collections and exhibitions, but also
prepare the special events especially for this one day of the
year.
From year to year the number of participants of the Long Night of
Museums is growing. Only in
Poznan it achieved in recent
years nearly 70 000! The concept of the event is to give you the possibility to visit all the museums and many
other cultural institutions completely for free.
Everyone will find something for oneself.
